Minutes

  1. Call to Order and Roll Call (Pollock/Acting Secretary)
    The meeting was called to order at 6:40pm. In attendance were Andrea Flores-Shelton, Steve Pollock, Tanya Freudenberger, Alice Sanchez, David Sanchez, Len Ramirez, John Leyba, Elizabeth Driedger and Eugene?.

  2. Re-Energizing the Alum Rock Neighborhood Coalition (Pollock)
    Steve Pollock spoke on the revitalization of ARNC citing the recruitment of substantive new leadership and identifying new goals and direction for the organization.

  3. Present Draft Charter (Flores-Shelton)
    Adrea Flores-Shelton presented the draft of the revised Charter (By-Laws). It was recommended by Tanya Freudenberger to seek the assistance from the San Jose Neighborhood Development Center (NDC) which is under the San Jose Strong Neighborhoods Initiative on certain details of the chair/committee structure as well as the legal benefits/disadvantages of 501(c)3 filing status for the organization.
    Elizabeth Driedger thus volunteered to contact the San Jose NDC to schedule a meeting with an NDC representative in order to have the draft Charter ready to be adopted before the next regular meeting which will be announced via the new Alum Rock Neighborhood Network E-List (ARNNE).
     
  4. Announce Open Board Positions and Nomination of Candidates
    It was agreed that once the Charter is adopted, vacant board positions can be announced as open to receiving nominations of candidates at the next regular board meeting

  5. Present Proposed Neighborhood Boundaries of ARNC (Driedger)
    Elizabeth Driedger presented a map of the proposed neighborhood boundaries that the ARNC will cover. After discussion between attendees, considering logistics of loosely defined border designations between Alum Rock and Berryessa, the circuitous nature of the roads along and approaching the foothills, and the historical project areas of the ARNC as well as the large area or residents who consider themselves apart of the Alum Rock Neighborhood, the group came up with proposed boundaries verbally described as follows: Highway 680 between E. Capitol Expy to Mabury Rd and east along Mabury Rd. to White Rd.North on White Rd. to Penitencia Creek Rd. East along Penitentcia Creek Rd to Alum Rock Park following along the boundary around the park to where it meets Crothers Rd.Southeast on Crothers Rd. to where it meets Mt. Hamilton Rd. Northwest on Hamilton Rd to the hairpin turn and then following southwest along a line of site from the hairpin to the end of Rosemar Ave and continuing along Rosemar Ave to Fleming Ave whereupon turning southeast on Fleming Ave to Story Rd.Turning west on to Story Rd from Fleming Ave and continuing along Story Rd to E. Capitol Expy where upon turning north on to E. Capitol Expy.Following north along E. Capitol Expy the boundary line terminates at Highway 680.

  6. Member Recruitment (Sanchez)

    1. Outreach into neighborhood areas within ARNC boundaries
      David Sanchez discussed having a committee position for member recruitment and neighborhood outreach. He indicated that he has experience in this area as well as media contacts for advertising and news releases and would like to head this committee.

  7. Development Issues in Alum Rock (Ramirez/Sanchez)

    1. SJ Permits Email List
      David Sanchez informed the attendees that the City of San Jose Planning Department has an email subscription list that notifies about permit application for new developments. The url to subscribe to the service is https://www.sjpermits.org/permits/permits/ . It is a great way to be alert for proposed developments that can impact one's property and/or neighborhood and to be able to thus have a voice in the application process.

    2. Marguerite Terrace – 10 Kirk Ave
      Len Ramirez wanted to ensure that attendees were aware that the property where the convalescent home, Marguerite Terrace that had formerly been known as the California P.E.O. Home for many decades was up for sale and that awareness needs to be raised within the community regarding the potential impact of its imminent development for other uses.

  9. Adjournment
    The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm and the next meeting set for Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at 6:30 pm at Joseph George Community/Recreation Center.
